Is It Illegal To Rent To Undocumented Individuals

R-E-investor profile photo

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with renting to someone that is suspected to be undocumented (illegal alien). My question is, if found that they are undocumented , is it illegal to rent to them. From my research, there has been mixed answers. I did find that in the federal law, it may be considered " harboring." if one provides shelter to an undocumented individual. I just wanted to get more input from other investors.

Thanks,
R-E-investor :-?

I don't know the legality of it, but I know I wouldn't rent to an illegal just to be on the safe side.

No its not illegal. Yet. But if the John Ashcroft/George Bush anti-terrotist juggernaught continues to roll along who knows what they will enact.

Not sure if it's illegal, anywhere, but think about this:

If they rented from you now, but disappeared in a few months, owing you for a month or two...what recourse would you have?

I've never heard of any LL collecting past-due rent (or any other bad debt or Judgment) from anybody in Mexico or any other 3d world country...it'd be tough enough in CAN or N.Europe, but 3d world?

    I'd guess no way,

Everyone has a good point about recourse. But then again how many of you have gotten anything out of a dead-beat tennant anyway? Turnups dont bleed.
Those people are the BEST payers on the planet. They run scared 24/7 of being deported EVERYDAY. They have a great bond with family and there culture is to stick together. Therfore, they pool their resorces to take care of business.

hahaha, that is a funny question, is it Illegal to deny a cash paying renter? i think that is illegal, but illegal to rent to illegal alien? im sure its not. Immigration status and rental, i quite don't see how these two have anything to do with each other.

Oh, by the way if i remember, that would be called Discrimination, wich would put you in hot water, if an illegal alien reported you not renting due to his immigration status. :-?
