Are the escrow company and the lenders doing double escrow these days? Can anyone share the details of a double escrow with me as far as lender is concerned. Does the lender have 2 contracts? Please help me understand.... Thank you...

Interesting. Looks like the only thing you could have done was withold rent for the months when the water was cut-off which would have violated your lease terms. As for the 300% increase, you were not obligated to sign the lease. I was looking at a house in Baltimore where the tenant paid $200 a month, the rent should have been $700. Suggest you not waste $$ on a lawyer and find another place to live.

Curious, why would your lawyer call this a federal offense? Not sure if I see a criminal act. You have out of state owners with $$ problems. Only problem that I see is that the PM may need to be certified in NJ.

    Hope this helps...just ny 2cents

Regarding how did i know the water amount when it was not in my name? Remember what i had said before, United Water posted the bill onto the front door of the house. My daughter came home from school and saw it and called me and told me about it after she had discovered that there was not water in the house. She was about to use the bathroom when she discovered this. I was in a meeting at work and had to leave immediately to see what was going on at home. This had really upsetted me and had put a huge burdeon on my entire family so, yes i am going to persue getting my money back for this loss and also for the increase amount which was done illegal and without proper written notice.

I think I would simply concentrate on finding a new place to live and let go of the problems with the landlord....those are things out of your control. Good luck with your new place.

    angrywoman,
The biggest scam MAY be any money that your lawyer is charging you. Get your deposit & run before the house goes to foreclosure or hang around & see if you get a couple of months for free during the foreclosure process.

    Time to move on...

    Ooops, forgot about the water.

About the water, see if the water company will turn it on in your name and deduct the amount you pay each month from the rent.

If you were not happy with the rent increase, why did you not find a new place to live when they were increasing the rent? You are not forced to pay the new rent amount, since you have the option to move.

I would look for a new place to live now before the foreclosure happens. Then you will be forced to move quickly. It would be better to look now so you can find a good property and landlord.

Well, today i had spoke with the attorney and he said that i would have to pay a $500 retainer fee for him to view the documents. Heck no will i let him do this. I will seek legal aid first and then if i really have to after researching other resources i will maybe consider sending it to him, but first i will do more and more research. But those people are not going to get doodley squat of my rent money anymore.. If i could buy the tax lien of the property i will do that but after i again do more background research on the landlord to see what she had in debts first. I will keep you posted for sure on this one.

Told ya. The only scam I saw was probably going to be the lawyer fee.

Angrywoman, I hope you understand that several people on this site have stated that you do not have a good case against your landlord. Remember, you are talking about landlords like myself who have signed many leases.

I will say again, you may only win this case if the landlord does not show up in court. The current landlord simply cannot maintain the same lease terms of your previous lease. Its not a crime to have financial difficuties.

If you remain in the house, and dont pay rent or fight your landlords water problems. You could easily get into a liability situation yourself, so be careful. I understand you are angry, but if your lawyer does anything to trigger legal costs for the landlord...you better watch your back.

If i were you, Id be checking out craigslist and the classified and trying to sweet talk the landlord into giving me my full deposit back. Good luck
