I live in California
My question is: the houses that makes it to the courthouse steps
when they auction them off could there be liens still aginst the property and have to deal with them if im the highest bidder
And how would you avoid this trap
or do all the parties that have liens settle and come up with the opening bid (ie 1st 2nd and tax or repair)
Please Help
Pete

Answer: Properties are sold as is - as is in structure and in title. So yes, you could have to deal with other liens.

Question: And how would you avoid this trap

Answer: By checking chain of title (by doing a title search yourself or have another research for a fee).

How can you do a title search yourself? Do ordinary people like me (who do not have any real estate affiliations or licenses, etc.) have a legit way to do that?

Yes by going to your county office that records mortgage and lien related documents.
