I'm On The HOA Board - Is That So Wrong?

iline5150 profile photo

I'm on the board of directors for my HOA and therefore privy to my neighbors HOA account activity.

Is it in bad form to approach my neighbor with an offer under these circumstances? I know there is plenty of equity(>$150,000.00) in the place but am leary of the approach given the situation.

Advice? Thanks in advance...

    Iline5150-

Personally, as a member of a HOA myself, I would be outraged if one of the Board members took advantage of non-public information for his/her own benefit. Think Martha Stewart.

On the other hand, if, in casual conversation, you mentioned that you are in the business of helping homeowners who have developed financial problems and are behind in their mortgage payments, association payments, etc., and asked if they knew of anyone he might be able to help.... You can develop your own script, but I think to base the approach directly on your foreknowledge of non-public information may not only be bad form, but may be in opposition to association rules and/or against state laws or statutes.

    As always, just my opinion....

    Hey,

Let's just be upfront on this one....you know it is "questionable" or else you would not have posted.

Go with the voice that is telling you that this is the wrong thing to do.
