Hi does anyone know of a way to get a free credit report for myself? Thanks!

And if not for free, then how do I get one and how much do they normally cost?

I think the law is you get one free one a year in VA... not sure in MD though. If you go to www.Equifax.com you can get one. They have like an 800 # and you can put in your social to see if you qualify for a free one (meaning you get 1 a year or if you have been denied credit recently you get a copy of it as well).

Ok, aren't there 3 credit companies? Equifax is one, but what are the others? And do you know if I can get free reports from them as well? Thanks!

Yeah the law is the same for any of the three different reporting companies. They are Transunion, Experian and Equifax... I just use Equifax because it is the most common one. If you have ever been denied credit, you have to go with the bureau that they pulled from. For example if you applied for a car loan with Citi and you got denied, you have the right (By law varies state to state) to see your credit report. You have to use the bureau that Citi pulled from... most of the companies pull through Equifax, because it is (I think?) the largest or most popular. However, you do not get a scored tri-merge, but you do get to see what is on it.

There's a law going into effect covering the entire US which entitles everyone to one free report per year........but the states are being phased in. I'm pretty sure Virginia is not yet "in".
