Just Curious........

I'm assuming that most of us on this are not yet full time investors yet. If that is the case, what do you do for a living F/T currently??
If you do aspire to be a full time investor, how long do you think it will be before you can do that, and how is your progress going?

I'm a mortgage loan officer and I put in about 50 hrs a week on this job. I figure that with the plan of action that I've laid out that I'll be able to be fully independent by mid 2006.

This has been asked before but what the hey..... The last post had a bunch of techies.

I am a teacher, plan is to be free to teach for fun by 2006. I would like to have my kids in class so will just teach for fun after 2006. I think it would be fun to go to my "job" but not worry about if I can pay my bills..... See you on the beach....

    James

PS: A better question may be how many units do you have? rent? or selling on a contract.

I am a full time investor and I've been that since the beginning of times. To me punch card machine are as strange as under-ocean telephone junctions. So do I qualify to respond to this post or not?

Aim at big deals and you'll make it sooner then you think you can. Good luck!

I currently work as a costume designer for Janet Jackson. Well I did anyways, now I guess I have to get back into RE. Oh well !

  • InActive_Account3rd February, 2004

Much of this depends on your motivation and comfort level in leaving your job. Sometimes we try to rush our success to the detriment of our success. Having a real job makes it easier to borrow money from banks.

  • jackman3rd February, 2004

michael is right. however, i'm doing it full-time - sorta my choice, sorta not! i didn't wait until i saved up a nest egg either, kinda did a suicide dive in september. haha. but i'm enjoying myself at any rate. it IS hard to prove income in the beginning tho - so i focus on deals where i don't have to.

i was a software engineer by trade, civil engineer by education ... now real estate investor by career!

Give Britney Spears' agent a call

  • elf25883rd February, 2004

<valiantly steering conversation back on topic, sorry Britney/Janet fans>

I am a marketing manager at an online marketing firm. Did my time in the dot-com hell and guess I still am. Any more dot-com refugees on board?

As to my goals and my props, I'm currently in my "studying/learning" phase and I am trying to save like mad to add to my nest egg now till June, then I will go at this full time. Properties: Currently have my principal residence and working on my second investment prop. Yep, easier to get these deals closed with a job!

A great author Napolean Hill gave a historic example of what one needs to do to achieve their goal of financial freedom: he tells of a leader who sailed to an island to wage a war. When they arrived on the island, he ordered his men to unload their weapons and supplies and then burn the ships that had carried them. He then said to his men "do you see that, our ships are being burned. We have but one choice here today, either we win or we parish"............They won.
Burn your ships, quit your job. You will find that you are so filled with motivation that you will be forced to succeed. Good luck! Disclaimer....this is just my opinion. If you quit your job and don't succeed, don't sue me!

I am a graduate student in occupational therapy. I would like to be free to do therapy either part-time or contract So that I can dedicate time to investing as well as being a therapist. I guess it depends on what you like to do.

  • Tripp3rd February, 2004

This is a good question. I think with the right team put together you can do this in a short period of time. Remember, you will need enough passive income to cover all your exspences. I am 32 and would like to retire by the age of 45, everyone has there own goal. Good luck, Tripp

I transfered all my assets to my children and now they are all leading the good indolent life.

I am now a newbie type person and enjoying my new found poverty by turning ISO steel shipping containers into beautiful termite proof, earthquake proof, bullet proof, (22 & 25 cal only), fire proof and oh yes floatable houses. Perfect for the varying seasons here in Calif. We are going to solve the problem of the inner city slum by creating small isolated slums thruout suburbia. Spread the poverty. Reduce the Tax Base.

I currently do network marketing so I tend to have to make things happen in order to get the paycheck I want every week. So thats what I plan to do with REI to the best of my ability. I also agree with Omega1 on looking for the big deals.
Just remember it's a numbers game!!!
Good luck see you at the TOP!!

  • barbaralell4th February, 2004

I am an OR tech in a Labor and Delivery Unit at a hospital. I am almost finished with my RN, but I am now on my new path of millionare thru REI.

Okay, I’ll add to this one too.

I have my own company, and we do all kinds of video production, animation, interactive software, web development and event production. REI is more of an avocation at this point, but my property has often made more money just sitting there, than I have working my ___ off. So it’s looking better all the time.

Here’s an idea – what if TCI had a private members list or forum, showing occupation, etc., where we could really network each others skills. You know, stuff like… "Hey, I’m have computer problems. Does anyone freelance?"

    Just a thought.

I like that thought. My full time occupation is Executive Asst. In other words, the glue that holds someone ELSE together. That's why I want to learn to do this full time; work for myself. I am surrounded by people who love to sell but ask them to write a simple letter and they're lost.
I'd be open to helping others with documents, scheduling, etc for REI guidance. The more I learn the faster I get out of the rat race.

I suppose I am the only grease monkey on this here forum huh? CH-46E Sea Knight is the bird I specialize in, Airframe and Hydraulic mechanic. I usually have to apologize for my hands everytime I meet new people! I just can't get them clean!

  • InActive_Account4th February, 2004

Want to go full time. Ask yourself this How many deals to I have to do to replace my current income? Including any vacation time , sick time etc... Then make a plan and timetable and go for it. That's what I did and after 16 years in television I'm been full time almost 4 years.

  • Stockpro994th February, 2004

I am a contractor/options investor/wheeler dealer. I have done everything from being a UPS driver, bank president, to putting export import deals together.
I have been investing for 15 years part time mainly in rehab and will jump into it with both feet full time this year as I am ready for a change

  • Dvk5f4th February, 2004

I'll jump in here. I work in fixed income capital markets, in mortgage-backed securities sales/trading at an investment bank. Pretty interesting, faced paced, lucrative business but if I could go full time with RE investing tomorrow, I'd do it in split second. I can't think of a cooler gig to have than one day having a fund with a couple of hundred million dollars of equity and traveling all over the country and the world investing in properties. But that's only dreams right now....I guess we all gotta start somewhere.

  • MikeWood4th February, 2004

To say what I do may not cover what I have had to do as this past year I have had four different jobs and was unemployed ( not by choice ) for a short time. I am an electronics tech by education and would like to be free to do whatever. Full-time investor by when??? Not really sure yet when it will happen but I have my first rental property aking me some money and should sell my current house for a good profit in the near future as well. Take care everyone and wish you well !!!!!!
