Hi all, I am not a realtor, how can I get access to the MLS in California? Preferably for free?

You should work out an arrangement with a realtor or broker.

The MLS isint going to give you comps. It will give you info on what people are asking for their homes in a given area. To get comps go to a title agent or ask a realtor for access to a title website.
Correction
MLS is the Multi Listing System.
This system does provide comps.
This is the system that realtors, brokers, title comps and so on get their comps from in most areas.

Some county sites give recent sales data. Just looke at the LA county site. They do. http://assessormap.co.la.ca.us/mapping/viewer.asp

Try doing a Google search for Appraiser research sites. These sites are what many appraisers use to pull comps in addition to the MLS. For about $3-5 you can pull comps for a specific property anywhere in the US. I use www.netronline.com, but there a lots of these companies out there.
If you are just interested in the MLS for current listings, most REA will be more than happy to set you up with a daily emailed listing of all the new MLS listings in the area your are looking in.
If you want to just browse the MLS, try Google as there are several sites that have MLS data.

Some MLS have link to other property info systems. Few companies develop that of system, as far as I know, they have customers (mostly MLS boards) all over the country. If So Cal is linked a system like that, you should be able to run comps.
Like others have suggested, you need a realtor friend to access MLS to run comp.

You can access the MLS on www.realtor.com and it's good for the entire USA. NO selling comps there but tons of listing comps, etc...use their zipcode search.
