A Mistake Or Some Sort Of Scam

LadyZena profile photo

I got a call today from a mortgage company asking for my SS#. I asked the person what this was in reference to and she stated some property ( vacant land) I was selling to Mr. X. She then asked me for details on another home I own which is in NO way related to the property I am selling Mr. X. She told me he had ordered title insurance on my home and not on the vacant land I was selling to him! Can anyone order title insurance on someone else's property ? Can they get my personal info this way or am I just being paranoid???

Did she give any reason? If you are paranoid, then I am as well. That just doesn't sound right...

first off don't give any personal information over the phone. Identity theft is a real concern these days. If you can find out which title company is handling the sale, and find out what else may be going on.

You are paranoid. Title company is checking to make sure you are the correct person and not another person with the same name or similar. Happens all the time when you are selling a property or some one with a name like yours is selling a property. Do make sure who they are

    Good LUCK and HAPPY HOLIDAYS

    Hope this helps some

The call was from the mortgage company, though, not the title company...??? I can see the title company needing to confirm, but why would the mortgage company for the buyer call to request this?

    Catfish! Sucker! Mackerel! Carp!
(Stinky-stinky, fishy-fishy)......can you smell it, too?

I concur with jeff12002 - don't ever give out personal information over the phone or otherwise unless you have initiated the contact or can verify it's source and purpose.

Sounds like you already know the answer to your own question - in the end, you can always trust yourself, trust your gut instinct.

    Good luck,
    Noel

PS - if it is the title company trying to verify identity, you can ask them to request in writing.

It's just my opinion but a certain amount of paranoia is healthy. Also it's my opinion that one should do what they need to, to feel comfortable within any situation, and caution should never be thrown to the wind.
